Syrian opposition calls on UN to break siege of Rukban camp

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Syrian opposition demanded on Wednesday the UN to take urgent procedures to break the siege imposed on Rukban camp on the Syrian-Jordanian border.

The Rukban camp was established in 2014, and it houses more than 12.000 displaced people (IDPs), most of them come from the countryside of Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, Homs and Hama.

The opposition Syrian National Coalition (SNC) said in a statement that the IDPs in the camp live tragic conditions, including lack of food, water, milk, and medical equipment due to the siege imposed by the Syrian government, and due to the UN’s failure to access the camp.

The statement called on the UN to take full charge and to work effectively to assure dignified lives for the IDPs of the camp.

The camp is run by opposition factions supported by the US-led Global Coalition, which uses al-Tanf area as a military base in Syria.

In April, the Euro‑Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor issued a statement in which it called on all concerned parties “to take urgent action to provide relief support to the displaced Syrians in the al-Rukban camp on Syria’s southern border with Jordan as the humanitarian crisis intensifies with the depletion of basic materials.”
