QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM) general Michael “Erik” Kurilla visited on Saturday al-Tanf military base in southern Syria.
General Kurilla visited a US fighter wing in the “al-Tanf Garrison in Syria, and a compound of the Jaysh Maghaweir Al-Thowra (MAT), a partnered Syrian force supporting the campaign to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS,” the US Central Command tweeted.
The Maghaweir al-Thowra (Revolutionary Commando Army) is a US-backed opposition group that operates in southern Syria, specifically in the vicinity of al-Tanf military base.
“General Kurilla spoke with MAT fighters at their compound which was struck by Russian fighter jets on June 7th and since repaired,” the tweet added.
The Al-Tanf military base, southeast Syria, is located near the borders with Iraq and Jordan and it was established by the US-led Global Coalition in the context of its war against the Islamic State Organization (ISIS).
The CENTCOM indicated that “the fighters assured the commander they remain undeterred and ready to fight.”
