QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, Russia vetoed a draft resolution of the United Nations Security Council on reauthorization of cross-border aid mechanism to Syria for a year.
Russia vetoed a resolution drafted by Ireland and Norway that would have extended aid deliveries to Syria from Turkey.
The resolution received 13 votes in favor, while China abstained.
During the same session, western nations did not support a Russian proposal to extend the mechanism for six months with only Russia and China voting in favor.
Meanwhile, the US, Britain and France voted against it and the remaining 10 council members abstained.
The authorization of aid deliveries through Bab al-Hawa from Turkey, which has been in effect since 2014 and does not require backing from Damascus, is set to expire on July 10.
Western nations called for continuing the mechanism; while Russia sought that the UN aid deliveries are transferred to the opposition-held areas through the Syrian government-held areas.
