World’s silence towards Sayfo massacres lets Turkey commit more crimes – Syriac party

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syriac Union Party denounced on Tuesday the silence of the international community towards Sayfo massacres, also known as the Assyrian genocide, committed by the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

The Syriac Union Party said in a statement on the occasion of the 117th anniversary of the Sayfo massacres that “the case is still open despite the Turkish state’s denial… it was a deliberate and systematic decision to exterminate a people and displace those who survived the massacres.”

The Syriac Union Party said the international community silence opened the way for Turkey to commit more massacres and new genocides in Syria.

The Syriac Union stated that Turkey expelled the indigenous people from their areas and settled others with the aim of making a demographic change to the region to serve its interests.

The party reiterated its rejection of the safe zone project which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants to establish it in northern Syria.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on May 23 that Turkey would launch a new military operation across its southern borders with Syria to create a safe zone.

“The safe zone project is a new Sayfo massacre against all the peoples of the region. The international community should stand firmly to the Turkish plans,” the statement said.

In the statement, the party reiterated its decisive position on the need to activate the international resolutions related to the Syrian issue and to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis that ends the suffering of the Syrians, and regional interventions that exacerbate the suffering.

In its statement, the party reiterated its commitment to the peaceful and diplomatic struggle until the genocide is fully recognized and its perpetrators are held accountable. It also stressed the coexistence of all Syrian communities in the a pluralistic, decentralized democratic state.
