People of Syria’s Tabqa condemn Turkish threats to northern Syria

TABQA, Syria (North Press) – In a statement to the public opinion, the Legislative Council in the city of Tabqa, northern Syria, condemned on Monday Turkish threats to launch a military operation in northern Syria.

On May 23, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey is preparing for a new military operation in northern Syria to establish a 30-km deep “safe zone” along its southern border.

The Turkish threats to launch a new military operation in northern Syria aim to complete the project of demographic change that Turkey seeks, by displacing the region’s original inhabitants.

The Democratic Civil Administration was founded in the city of Tabqa in 2017 after it was liberated from ISIS by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) backed by the US-led Global Coalition. Later it joined the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) defeated ISIS militarily.

“The safe zone project claimed by Turkey is a flimsy argument for a new incursion into more Syrian territory, and it aims to repeat what the Turkish-backed armed factions did in the areas of Tel Abyad and Sere Kaniye,” the statement added.

The statement pointed out that any potential Turkish incursion may revive the activities of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS).

The statement called on the international community and the United Nations to take a deterrent attitude towards the Turkish threats and inhumane practices committed in the areas of northern Syria.

Since the start of the Syrian crisis, Turkish forces and their affiliated armed opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), occupied several regions in northern Syria including Azaz, al-Bab, Jarablus, Afrin, Tel Abyad and Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain).
