AANES sends letter to countries regarding Turkey’s threats against northern Syria

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – An official in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) said Monday that the Administration’s Department of Foreign Relations had sent a letter to many countries addressing the latest Turkish threats of launching a military operation against north and east Syria.

The military operation targets the areas held by the AANES, and constitutes a major threat for the administration.

The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) defeated ISIS militarily.

Abdulkarim Omar, the co-chair of the Department of Foreign Relations in the AANES, said that the department had sent an open letter to many countries regarding the Turkish threats against the region.

According to Omar, the letter was sent to Arab and foreign countries, and includes many issues related to the Turkish threats and the human rights violations committed by Turkey and its affiliated armed factions in northern Syria.

The Department of Foreign Relations, attached the letter with files documenting the Turkish violations.

The letter was sent to foreign ministries of many countries in contact with the Autonomous Administration, he told North Press.

Omar indicated that “Turkey exploits the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, and Russia and NATO, and tries to take this opportunity to carry out another incursion in north and east Syria.”

“This would destabilize the region and give direct help to ISIS which threatens the region and the whole international community,” the co-chair said.

On May 29, the Autonomous Administration released a statement, in which they called for peacekeeping forces on the borders separating the areas it runs from those held by Turkish forces.
