Turkish threats aim at destabilizing NE Syria – Future Syria Party
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Head of the Future Syria Party – Deir ez-Zor branch, Thamir al-Shammari, said on Saturday that the latest Turkish threats about launching a military operation aim at destabilizing the regions of north and east Syria.
On Thursday, the Turkish National Security Council said that Turkey’s “existing and future military operations” along its southern borders were necessary for the country’s security but that they did not target the sovereignty of its neighbors
This came days after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on May 23 about his country’s intention of starting a new incursion in northern Syria.
Turkey’s threats would result in a security disruption that would “pave the way for ISIS cells to revive in the region,” al-Shammari added to North Press.
He warned that what Turkey does would undermine the efforts made for defeating ISIS.
Turkey continues to shell the border areas of the areas held by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in order to create a state of chaos in northeastern Syria and displace the population to achieve its interests.
The Autonomous Administration was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) defeated ISIS military.
On Friday, a US State Department spokesman told North Press that any potential Turkish invasion of northern Syria would jeopardize the US forces and the coalition’s campaign against ISIS.
The Turkish President’s statements drew negative reactions, as well as international and regional concern, according to official statements.
The Future Syria Party was founded on March 27, 2018. Ibrahim al-Qaftan was elected as the president of the party and Hevrin Khalaf was elected as secretary-general.
In 2019, Hevrin Khalaf was assassinated on M4 highway between Raqqa and Hasakah by Ahrar al-Sharqiya, a Turkish-backed armed faction.
