Infighting between Turkish-backed factions kills elderly man in Syria’s Afrin

AFRIN, Syria (North Press) – Yesterday, an 80-year-old civilian man succumbed to injuries he sustained while caught in the crossfire of infighting between two Turkish-backed armed factions in early April in the countryside of Afrin, north Aleppo.

On April 7, fighting with machine guns and medium weapons erupted between al-Hamza Division and Sham Legion in the countryside of Afrin’s Bulbul district, wounding an elderly man and a woman.

The elderly man, named Bayram Ma’mo but known as Abu Abdo, was struck in the neck with a piece of shrapnel and was hospitalized at Afrin National Hospital where he passed away, an eyewitness told North Press.

His body was handed over to his family in order to be buried in his village, the eyewitness said.

Since Turkey’s invasion of Afrin in 2018, the city of Afrin and its surrounding countryside have witnessed a state of security chaos characterized by explosions and continuous infighting between the Turkish-backed opposition factions amid the latter’s inability to maintain the security there, according to the testimonies of local residents.
