Turkey exploits Russian-Ukrainian war and escalates in Syria

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – Turkish government is taking advantage of the world’s preoccupation with the Ukrainian war and is escalating in northeastern Syria, Ibrahim al-Qaftan, head of the Future Syria Party, said.

Since early April, the Turkish forces with the Turkish-backed armed  opposition factions have escalated their attacks on northeastern Syria, as the town of Abu Rasin (Zarkan) witnessed intense bombardment, causing a large wave of displacement and the destruction of civilians property.

Al-Qaftan considered the Turkish escalation as a continuation of the hostile and aggressive behavior pursued by Turkey against the Syrian people.

On April 19, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said that Turkey has escalated its attacks on northeast Syria since the beginning of the month, taking advantage of the silence of the guarantors of the ceasefire agreement, in reference to the US and Russia.

“Turkey is still promoting a military operation to target areas of the Autonomous Administration and to occupy new lands in northern Syria,” al-Qaftan added.

The town of Tel Tamr in north of Hasakah, northeast Syria, has been under constant attack by Turkish military and its affiliated armed Syrian opposition factions for more than two years despite a ceasefire agreement signed among the US, Russia, Turkey and the SDF to cease Turkish hostilities.

The Turkish offensive with the armed factions against Tel Tamr started after the incursion into Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad in October 2019, following battles with the SDF and the sudden withdrawal of the US troops from the area prompting Russian and Syrian government forces to position in the town.
