QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – More than 11 years of war in Syria have left many Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) that kill, injure and maim civilians on a regular basis.
These ERWs, which are scattered across Syria and planted by different armed groups, include Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), land mines and other unexploded ordnances, and present an ongoing threat on the Syrians’ lives.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) have documented the ERW casualties along the 11-year-old war.
In early March, SOHR reported that 29 civilians were killed (including 12 children) and 29 others were injured (including three women and nine children) due to ERW.
In January, the ERW claimed lives of 63 people including 28 children and injured 78 people including 49 children.
The toll continues to rise and is still threatening lives of residents of various Syrian regions where different factions stepped on and battles were waged.
