Countries have responsibility repatriate citizens from Syria’s Hawl Camp, politician

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Foreign countries hold responsibilities to repatriate their nationals from “Hawl Camp dilemma” in northeast Syria, warning, at the same time, the whole world of the Islamic State (ISIS) threats, a politician said on Wednesday.

On March 28, security forces and sleeper cells of ISIS exchanged fire in the fourth sector of the Hawl Camp. It was reported ISIS cells used medium weapons.

Thamer Shammeri, head of Future Syria Party in Deir ez-Zor, stated to North Press that countries have to repatriate their citizens from Hawl Camp to evade the repetition of the scenario of Hasakah-based al-Sina’a prison.

“The dilemma of camps reappears from time to time given the camps are like time bomb. The latest events in Hawl Camp is an example. ISIS sleeper cells were reactivated and committed terrorist actions inside the camp,” he said.

Shammeri added that the international community holds responsibility to prosecute ISIS members and put an end to their operations. “ISIS case should be closed. The people here paid the price of ISIS crimes and the world will do unless the international community take the steps and realize the threat ISIS pose to such camps.”

Hawl Camp is known to be a time bomb as extremist wives and children of ISIS members reside and thousands of people loyal to ISIS live in the notorious camp.

Hawl Camp, 40 km, east of Hasakah, houses about 56,150 people from about 15,250 families, including 2,423 families of ISIS killed members and foreign detainees who hail from about 60 countries.

An estimate of 1,076 individuals including children and women, were repatriated to their nations between 2017-2021 in addition to seven former ISIS members who were repatriated to Indonesia in 2018, according to the AANES Department of Foreign Relations.
