No consensus on readmitting Syria: Secretary of Arab League

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said on Wednesday that there is still a lack consensus among the members of the League to readmit Syria.

“The main point is that the issue was not discussed in the general context and in the Arab collective framework today, whether in the consultation meeting or in the open meetings… because this issue will be left for bilateral contacts between member states,” Aboul Gheit said in a press conference after the 157th meeting of the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers.

“If there is consensus regarding full membership, then the talk will be about readmitting Syria. However, we have still a lack of this consensus,” he said.

In 2011, Syria was suspended from the Arab League due to the outbreak of the Syrian war.

“The return of Syria to the Arab League is not at the top of the government’s priorities in Damascus,” the Syrian Foreign Minister, Faisal Mekdad, said previously.
