QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – In the fifth day of Russia-Ukraine war, several developments took place the most prominent of which was the start of the talks between the two countries.
High-ranking delegations of both Russia and Ukraine started to negotiate at Russia-Belarus borders and the two parties returned their capitals “for consultations,” a Ukrainian official said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia’s deterrence forces — including its nuclear weapons — have been placed on alert.
In a statement issued today, the White House said Monday, “the Biden administration wants to reduce the rhetoric and deescalate after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his country’s deterrence forces – which include nuclear arms – be placed on high alert.”
For his part, the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged G7 and other world leaders to continue to provide Ukraine with defensive weapons and to keep up the pressure on Putin’s regime.
The Russian military claimed Monday that its armed forces have hit 1,146 Ukrainian military installations since the beginning of the “special operation,” Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, the spokesperson for Russian Ministry of Defense, said in a statement.
China’s Permanent Representative to the UN Zhang Jun called on parties to exercise restraint, step up diplomatic efforts, and notably said he supports the European Union, The North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Russia resuming dialogue including the “legitimate” security concerns of all, including Russia.
Among the sanctions imposed by the US and NATO was the suspension of Russian national football teams and club teams from competition until further notice by global football governing body FIFA and European football governing body UEFA.
