Residents of Syria’s Tel Tamr recall ISIS attacks on their areas

TEL TAMR, Syria (North Press) – Hundreds of residents of the town of Tel Tamr north of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, recalled, on Wednesday, the attacks of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) on the area in February 2015.

In 2015, ISIS launched a violent attack, targeting Assyrian villages in particular, as it kidnapped 250 Assyrians at the time, causing the displacement of about 10,000 Assyrians from the region.

The Martyrs’ Families Foundation (an organization that sponsors the families of fighters who lost their lives in the war against ISIS) in the town of Tel Tamr, annually commemorates the resistance they showed against ISIS during its attack on the villages of Khabour basin.

The People’s Protection Units (YPG), the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), the Assyrian Khabour Guards Forces, and the Syriac Military Council formed a joint operations room to repel the attack.

The battles continued for about three months and ended with the liberation of the kidnapped and the expulsion of the ISIS from the areas it controlled.

During the commemoration ceremonies, they indicated their fears of Turkish attacks that would cause the displacement of the remaining residents of the area, in light of the almost daily bombardment of the villages of Tel Tamr.

The countryside of Tel Tamr includes about 33 Assyrian villages, five of which were almost fully emptied due to ISIS attacks and their location on the frontlines with the Turkish forces, according to the residents.
