Government forces members killed in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

AL-MAYADIN, Syria (North Press) – Three members of the Syrian government forces were killed on Wednesday in an attack carried out by unidentified gunmen likely to be affiliated with ISIS sleeper cells in the Deir ez-Zor desert, east Syria.

Taking advantage of the weather conditions and the formation of fog, gunmen believed to be affiliated with ISIS cells broke into a government forces’ checkpoint in the Sabikhan desert in Deir ez-Zor countryside, North Press reported a military source from the government forces.

Three members of the Air Force Intelligence Service of the government forces were killed by the attackers, the source said.

ISIS, which is very active in the Syrian desert, continues to carry out military operations against government forces through ambushes, planting explosives and mines, or launching surprise attacks.

Since losing its last stronghold in Baghouz in March 2019, ISIS has turned into cells spread in the Syrian Badia, and in separate areas of Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, Hasakah and other Syrian regions.
