Biden nominates Corella to lead US command in the Middle East
ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – The US president Joe Biden will nominate the Lt. Gen. Michael E. Corella as a commander of US Central Command in the Middle East (CENTCOM), the Pentagon said yesterday.
The CENTCOM is the US largest military units and focuses on Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Yemen.
The paratrooper Lt. Gen. Michael E. Corella will replace Marine Corps Gen. Frank McKenzie in case the Senate approved to appoint him.
Currently, Corella, 55, commands the Army’s 18th Airborne Corps, which includes at Fort Bragg base, North Carolina, the largest part of the US ground intervention forces, according to AFP.
Corella is a graduate of West Point Military Academy and fought in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq, where he was seriously wounded by bullets during an attack in Mosul in 2005, AFP reported.
He also held responsibilities in the US Army General Staff and was commander of the prestigious 82nd Parachute Division, well-known for its participation in the Normandy landings in 1944.
