Syria’s Autonomous Administration vows to hold election in early 2022
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – The co-chair of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), Abd Hamed al-Mehbash, said they are preparing for holding elections during the first quarter of next year.
Two days ago, the expanded committee for drafting the Social Contract for northeast Syria suspended its meeting after discussing and amending 30% of the draft contract that had been prepared by a small committee formed last July.
The committee is scheduled to resume its discussions in the coming weeks, without specifying a date.
Al-Mehbash stressed, in a statement to the AANES’s official TV Rojava that elections will be held in 2022, and indicated their preparations for holding them in the first quarter of next year.
Al-Mehbash said the elections need a comprehensive census of the demographics of the population in northeastern Syria.
He also stated that they are preparing for the establishment of an electoral commission in the AANES areas.
Al-Mehbash pointed out that the draft of the Social Contract is ready and there have not been any fundamental changes.
“The issue of holding elections in north and east Syria will be discussed after the completion of the drafting of the social contract,” co-chair of the AANES General Council Farid Atti said in a previous statement to North Press om mid-June.
Atti pointed out that the new social contract will determine the form and structure of the administration, and will include the Executive and Legislative Council, the Supreme Administrative Court and the Electoral Commission.
On July 15, a mini-committee of 30 members was formed to prepare a draft of the Social Contract, which will be considered as a constitution that will regulate the work of the Autonomous Administration politically, economically and socially if it is approved after discussion and submitted to the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration.
