QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, the Human Rights Organization-Afrin said a Turkish-backed armed opposition faction demanded a ransom for the release of a prisoner in the Turkish-controlled city of Afrin, northern Syria.

The Military Police faction had arrested Ahaed Rashid, from Keila village, on charges of being a guard during the time of the Autonomous Administration.

Three months after his arrest, the faction asked Rashid’s family $5,000 for his release.

Moreover, the same faction arrested two people from Ma’abatli district, Afrin countryside, without revealing the charges behind the arrest, according to the Human Rights Organization-Afrin.

Farid Mustafa, 48, is from Amara village and Jihad Muhammad Mansour, 45, is from Shorba village.

Since the beginning of 2021, 660 people, including, 11 children and 37 women, have been detained in Afrin city and its countryside, the Violation Documentation Center in Northern Syria (VDC-NSY) announced.

The city of Afrin and its villages, north of Aleppo, have been controlled by Turkish forces and the affiliated factions since March 2018.

The Afrin region has been witnessing cases of killing, kidnapping and arrest, in addition to frequent bombings, amid the inability of the factions controlling it to settle the security in the region.
