Mutual shelling continues between government, opposition in northwest Syria

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, mutual shelling continued between Turkish-backed armed opposition factions and Syrian government forces in the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria.

North Press Agency quoted military sources as saying, sites of the opposition factions in the vicinity of the villages and towns of Atarib, Kafr Ta’al and Tedil in the western countryside of Aleppo, were hit with heavy artillery by the government forces in the Regiment 46.

“A person was killed in the town of Atarib and another was wounded in the bombing. The injured was taken to medical points for treatment,” the sources added.

The opposition factions’ sites in the villages of Sfuhen, Fatterah and Ma’arzaf in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, were also bombed with heavy artillery and missiles, according to the same sources.

In a related context, the sources indicated that the opposition’s sites in the towns of al-Enkawi and al-Qahira in the Ghab Plain, west of Hama, bombed with artillery and missiles of the government forces stationed in Jurin camp in the same area.

Responding to the government forces’ shelling, al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room, which has several opposition factions alongside Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, bombed the government’s sites in the areas of Jadraya and Miznaz, west of Aleppo, the opposition said.

The al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room also bombed points of the government forces’ positions near the town of Kafr Battikh in the eastern countryside of Idlib.

Yesterday, three people who were said to be civilians were killed in the Russian airstrikes, 12 others were injured of varying severity.

For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
