New child recruitment complaints recorded in Syria’s Kobani

KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – Since November, Child Protection Office in Armed Conflicts of the Euphrates Region, north Syria, has recorded 18 complaints related to child recruitment cases.

The recent two were recorded by the office in the last two days.

18 complaints of child (males and females) recruitment were recorded since November and three of them were reunited with their families, co-chair of the Child Protection Office in the Euphrates region, Fathi Mahmoud, said.

The Child Protection Office was activated in October 2020. This step came after an agreement signed by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief, Mazloum Abdi, with the United Nations to prevent the recruitment of children and their use as combatants in armed conflict.

In 2021, 62 underage children out of 106 cases reported  were demobilized by the SDF, according to Mahmoud.

“The complaints filed to the office by local residents are submitted immediately, on arrival, to the General Office in northeast Syria,” Mahmoud added.

The office received 36 complaints in 2020 alone.

In late August 2021, the Executive Board in the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria (AANES), decided to create Child Protection Office in Armed Conflicts in each city across the region.
