Syria’s northwest witnesses mutual bombardment

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, mutual bombardment between the Syrian government forces and armed opposition factions resumed in areas of the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria.

Al-Fatah al-Mubin Operations’ Room  shelled the government forces in the village of Kafr Battikh, east of Idlib, northwest Syria, with heavy artillery and rockets, military sources told North Press.

It is noteworthy that al-Fatah al-Mubin includes Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) and many other armed opposition factions.

The Syrian government forces targeted sites of the opposition factions in the vicinity of al-Ankawi town and Sarmaniya, and Hmeimat villages, in Ghab Plain, in the western countryside of Hama, with dozens artillery shells, military sources told North Press.

Meanwhile, the Syrian government forces in Aleppo targeted posts of the opposition factions in the towns of Tedil and Kafr Ta’al in addition to the surrounding agricultural lands.

The shelling coincided with intensive flights by Russian and Iranian drones over Idlib and the western countryside of Hama and Aleppo.

For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
