Government, opposition exchange shelling in northwest Syria
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, areas in the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria witnessed mutual shelling between Syrian government forces and Turkish-backed armed opposition factions.
The opposition factions’ sites in the villages and towns of al-Fatira, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, al-Bara, Benin, and the outskirts of Balyon in Zawiya mountain, south of Idlib, were shelled with heavy artillery and rockets by the government forces, North Press reported sources from the opposition.
The opposition factions’ sites in the villages and towns of Tedil and Kafr Ta’al, west of Aleppo, were also hit by the government forces’ shelling, while no casualties were reported, the sources said.
The factions announced that they shelled the government forces’ posts near the eastern side of the Zawiya Mountain area. They also and bombed the Regiment 46, west of Aleppo.
While Russian warplanes escalated striking the opposition-controlled areas in the southern countryside of Idlib this morning.
For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.
Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
