ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – On Saturday, the death toll of protestors in Sudan, who took to the streets in rejection of the army’s taking power last week, has risen to 40.
Sudanese supporters of civilian rule reject the military rule in the country, so they have taken to the streets of cities, especially the capital, Khartoum, against what they describe as a “military coup”.
Last month, the coup leader, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, dissolved the civilian arm of the government’s power-sharing agreement, arrested civilian leaders and declared a state of emergency.
These bloody events come more than two years after the uprising that ended with the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir in April 2019 and the formation of a transitional authority consisting of civilians and military personnel to run the country’s affairs until legislative elections are held in 2023.
