Hospital in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor lacks required medical equipment

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – An administrator in the Euphrates Public Hospital in the town of Abu Hamam, east of Deir ez-Zor, east Syria, said yesterday, the hospital is about to close as a result of the lack of medicine and first aid.

Medical points and hospitals in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor still lack supplies, medical equipment, and medicines.

The hospital has opened since February and so far it has not received the required support by any party, the director of the Euphrates Public Hospital, Abdulqader al-Ahmad, told North Press.

“There are no surgery room, rays, laboratory and all equipment, are not available,” al-Ahmad said.

He also warned, “the hospital is going to close in case the supplies are not secured.”

The hospital relies on good donors of the region and on the medicines that are provided by the Health Board of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) which can hardly last for a week, according to the director of the hospital.

On October 13 of 2020,the AANES with the participation of the US-led Global Coalition started the renovation project of Abu Hamam Hospital.

On March 18, the US Deputy Special Envoy to Syria, David Brownstein, accompanied by US military officials and the head of the Deir ez-Zor Civil Council, officially opened Abu Hamam Hospital.

Between 300/500 patients visits the hospital on a daily basis.

The hospital requires an operating room, x-ray equipment, laboratory, echo, care rooms, and an oxygen system, due to the increasing number of the coronavirus infections in the region, according to the hospital director.

Al-Ahmad appealed to all parties including the Health Board of Deir ez-Zor Civil Council and the humanitarian organizations to provide the required support to the hospital.
