Russian airstrikes hit opposition-held areas in Syria’s Idlib

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, Russian warplanes launched airstrikes on Syrian opposition-held areas south of Idlib within the context of the flare-up in the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria for over months.

The Russian military escalation in the de-escalation zone faces silence by the Turkish forces which is one of the ceasefire guarantors.

Russian warplanes fired high-explosive vacuum rockets several times in a row against opposition-controlled strongholds in the vicinity of Iblin town in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, military sources told North Press.

The Russian airstrikes coincided with artillery shelling by Syrian government forces on opposition-held sites in the vicinity of the towns Iblin, Belyon, Kansafra and al-Bara in the south of Idlib.

For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
