Government forces, opposition exchange shelling in northwest Syria
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, several areas in the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria witnessed mutual shelling between Syrian government forces and Turkish-backed Syrian armed opposition factions.
The government forces, stationed in the town of Kafranbel and its checkpoints, bombed the faction’s positions in the villages and towns of al-Fatira, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra and Fleifel in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, with heavy artillery and rockets, North Press reported military sources in the opposition.
The bombardment hit the opposition moves near al-Sermaniyah and Dweir al-Akrad, west of Hama, in addition to areas in Jabal al-Akrad north of Latakia.
In Aleppo, the government forces, stationed in the Regiment 46, bombed the factions’ sites near Tedil, Kafr Ta’al, Kafruma and Kafr Nouran, west of Aleppo, local sources said.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS-formerly al-Nusra Front) along with the armed factions of the National Front for Liberation announced they bombed the government forces’ positions in the Regiment 46 and the towns of Khan al-Sebl and Kafr Battikh, east of Idlib.
For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.
Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
