Turkish operation on Syria’s northeast causes humanitarian disaster: Syrian politician

MANBIJ, Syria (North Press) – Any Turkish military operation against areas in Syria’s northeast will cause a humanitarian disaster displacing hundreds of thousands of the population, a Syrian female politician said on Wednesday.

Speaking of a military operation against northeast Syria on Monday, Erdogan said: “It will be carried out when it is a must, adding “it cannot be undone.”

“Any Turkish military operation will have disastrous impacts on about five million people residing in areas in northeast Syria,” member of Manbij branch of the Syrian National Democratic Alliance Party, Muna al-Khalaf, said.

“The operation, if carried out, will cause a demographic change in addition to displacing hundreds of thousands of residents,” al-Khalaf added.

In an exclusive statement to North Press, al-Khalaf noted, the region is entering a new phase of political understandings especially between Russia and Turkey, “but they are still ambiguous.”

Meanwhile, the Syrian politician demanded the US-led Global Coalition and Russia “to act more seriously regarding the Turkish threats against the region, to honor their obligations and avoid the policy of bargains which has negative impacts on the residents of the area.”

Turkey cannot carry out any operations against the areas unless it gets both American and Russian green lights. But this has not been officially disclosed so far, according to the politician.

As for the former US Special Envoy for Syria, James Jeffrey, he made it clear that Washington would not abandon the partnership with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

“There is continuous cooperation on the ground between the American forces and the SDF,” Jeffrey added in a televised interview with the al-Hurra channel.

He confirmed that US President Joe Biden did not give Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a green light to launch a new attack on north and east Syria.
