Militants thought to be ISIS kill members of government east Syria
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, two members of Syria government forces were killed and four others were wounded, when they were targeted by gunmen raising the banner of the Islamic State organization (ISIS), in the town of al-Sukhna, east Syria.
Gunmen in a pickup vehicle equipped with a machine gun targeted a military point of the government forces at the western entrance to the town with machine guns and RPG-7, a source of the government-backed National Defense Forces told North Press.
Conditioning the anonymity, the source added that two members of the government forces were killed, and four others were wounded. They were transported to Palmyra Military Hospital for treatment.
The source pointed out that the gunmen were yelling Allah Akbar, which is often used by ISIS militants, before retreating towards the depth of the desert, raising the banner of ISIS on the car.
Following the attack, the government forces brought in reinforcement backed by helicopters to comb the area.
Areas controlled by the government forces and Iranian-backed militias have recently been witnessing battles with ISIS in the desert and eastern Syria’s areas.
On October 22, a leader of Iranian-backed faction was killed and three others were wounded as a result of an armed attack by ISIS militants in the desert of al-Sukhna.
The Iranian-backed factions run broad-scale swaths in the Syria’s eastern Badia, which has recently witnessed several fierce clashes with ISIS.
The Iranian-backed militias have controlled the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, since the expulsion of ISIS, in early 2017.
