Iraqi families leave Syria’s Hawl Camp for Iraq

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, more than 100 Iraqi families left Hawl Camp in the countryside of Hasakah, northeast Syria.

“115 Iraqi families, in total of 487 individuals, left the camp this afternoon by 13 buses,” a security source in the camp said.

“These families headed towards the Iraqi Jaz’a camp in Nineveh governorate, northwest Iraq,” the source added.

In May, 101 families had left the camp as the first batch of Iraqi refugees, after a two-and-a-half year suspension.

During 2017 and 2018, ten trips were conducted for Iraqis wishing to leave Hawl Camp towards their country, before the Iraqi government stopped them.

About 8,000 Iraqi families, in total of more than 30,000 individuals, have remained in Hawl Camp, along with Syrians estimated at 20,000 individuals.

It is worth mentioning that Hawl Camp houses 2,477 families in total of 8,370 members, including women and children, members of the dead and detainees of the Islamic State (ISIS).
