Shelling renews between government forces, Turkish-backed factions in Syria’s northwest

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria, witnessed the renewal of mutual shelling between Turkish-backed armed factions and Damascus government forces.

On Sunday morning, government forces targeted the fortifications of the factions in the towns of  Atarib, Mekalbis, Blenta, Kfar Amma, Kfar Ta’al, and 111 Brigade in the west Aleppo countryside with heavy artillery shells, military sources from the factions told North Press.

Meanwhile, Syrian government forces stationed in the city of Kafr Nabl targeted the factions’ posts in the town al-Fatira and Almaouzrah, south of Idlib, with mortars, according to the same sources.

The shelling coincided with intensive flight by Russian warplanes and drones over the countryside of Idlib, Hama, and Aleppo, reporting no airstrikes, the sources added.

Meanwhile, government forces stationed in Jurin Camp targeted the factions’ fortifications in the town of Zayzun in Ghab Plain, west Hama countryside, with rocket launchers.

Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room, which includes Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other armed groups, announced that they targeted posts and military gatherings of Damascus government forces in the town of Mizanaz, west Aleppo countryside, with mortars and Grad missiles.

Additionally, Fateh al-Mubin targeted the government military sites in Ain Salmo and Jurin Camp, west of Hama.

The region is witnessing a military escalation despite the entry into force of the ceasefire agreement signed between the Russian and Turkish sides in March of last year 2020.
