SDC condemns government use of force in Syria’s Daraa

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) condemned the government’s use of excessive force against unarmed civilians in southern Syria, warning of the escalation, which it described as dangerous in the city of Daraa.

In a statement, the SDC called on Russia to play its role as a guarantor of the fate of civilians there. It also called on the international community and the United Nations to put pressures and urgently intervene to stop the Syrian civil war.

The city of Daraa is witnessing “attempts to impose authority after the settlement and reconciliation agreements that took place in the governorates of Daraa and Quneitra under the Russian Federation’s auspices and guarantees,” the statement stated.

“What is known as settlements and reconciliations will not be an appropriate option for settling the Syrian crisis,” the statement explained.

Moreover, the statement referred to the demographic change attempts in big parts of Syria “through the deportations of the indigenous people and the evacuation of opponents, with the complicity of the various regional powers impacting on the Syrian issue.”

The statement called on residents in Daraa not to abandon their city and to reject calls for forced displacement.

“The regime’s insistence on pursuing the military option has proven its failure over the past years,” the statement pointed out.

“The political dialogue is the right alternative and the only option for resolving the crisis and reaching stability in the country,” the statement indicated.
