Nine new government military checkpoints in Syria’s Daraa al-Balad

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, Syrian government forces established nine new military checkpoints inside the city of Daraa al-Balad and the roads leading to the western countryside of Daraa.

On Saturday, the Central Committee in Daraa reached a final agreement with Syrian government forces to end the siege imposed on the neighborhoods of Daraa al-Balad; the military posts will be established in the post office, the Directorate of Electricity and on al-Sad neighborhood road, as the citizens of the neighborhoods are the ones entitled to protect those posts.

However, on Tuesday, the number of military checkpoints that were agreed upon, within the neighborhoods of Daraa al-Balad and al-Sad Road in the western countryside of Daraa, which the 15th Division will receive, was increased to nine, according to Issam Mahamid, a resident of Daraa al-Balad.

Mahamid, who previously worked for a local anti-government faction, told North Press that five checkpoints will be established in Daraa al-Balad and four in the western countryside.

“The city of Daraa al-Balad and the roads leading to the western countryside of Daraa were closed by these military checkpoints, which were agreed upon between the local central committees and government forces last night,” Mahamid added.

Light weapons were handed over and the status of 100 members of local opposition factions was settled.
