Constitutional Committee must comprehensively represent Syrians: local organization
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – The director of a local Syrian civil organization in northeastern Syria said that members of the Syrian Constitutional Committee share the idea that the Syrians must be comprehensively represented so that it is a true expression of all communities of Syrian society.
Faroq Haji Mustafa, Executive Director of Bercav Organization for Development and Media, stated that the marginalization and exclusion of north and east of Syria from the Constitutional Committee “has become an urgent issue.”
He added that the matter is important, not only for a few members of the civil society bloc in the Constitutional Committee, but also for the Special Envoy for Syria and relevant foreign countries.
Mustafa’s speech came on the sidelines of a dialogue session on the constitution held by Bercav Organization on Thursday in the city of Kobani, northern Syria, in the presence of intellectuals, lawyers, judges, and representatives of civil society and women’s organizations in the city.
On July 4, Bercav held a symposium on the Syrian constitution in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG), in the presence of Syrian academics.
That was after publishing research by the organization that included a series of sessions held in Syria and KRG on the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee and its position on the people of the north and east of the country.
On July 8, the organization held a dialogue session on the same issue in Derik, in the far northeast of Syria, in the presence of representatives of political parties, civil and women’s organizations, and the media.
Sessions conducted by Bercav aim to enhance the role of the local community in the constitutional process, and try to bring about a change in the constitutional process in Geneva in general, according to the organizers of the seminars.
Dr. Samira Mobayed, a member of the Constitutional Committee for the Civil Society Bloc, participated in the Kobani online session.
The Executive Director of the organization stressed that the constitutional committee must be reformed through comprehensive representation of all components, and that the lack of representation is one of the most important lapses facing the constitutional process.
The current constitutional committee is not independent and does not express the opinion of the Syrians in full, but that neighboring countries have a great influence on it, he added.
