Syria’s AANES reveals violations against women in its areas
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – On Saturday, the Women’s Board of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria revealed 657 cases of violations of women’s rights since the beginning of this year, pointing out that the cases increased after the economic siege of the region.
At the end of 2020, the General Justice Council of Northeast Syria issued an annual statistic of 1,590 crimes committed against women in AANES areas in the year 2020.
The violations recorded were 25 cases of murder, 288 cases of beating and abuse, 15 cases of death threats, 6 cases of harassment, 58 cases of underage marriage, 148 cases of polygamy, 64 cases of defamation, 7 cases of suicide, 37 cases of prostitution, and 9 cases of rape.
The perpetrators of the two crimes that took place in the Jazira region recently “will not be able to escape. They will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” according the Board statement.
Four days ago, a father strangled his daughter to death days after a similar crime in which the family of a girl shot her dead under the pretext of “honor.”
The Women’s Board stated that it is the responsibility of all institutions concerned with women’s issues to make efforts in order to educate women in society and to reach every woman in her home to inform her of the obstacles and difficulties she suffers from, and to work to educate her and empower her to know her rights and duties.
The Board attributed the reason for the increase in cases of violations of women’s rights in northeast Syria to the “economic crisis and the results of the war in the region.”
The Women’s Board in North and East Syria called on the UN, the Security Council and human rights organizations, to look closely at the Syrian situation in general and the Autonomous Administration in particular, as a result of being besieged from by inside and outside sides.
The imposed siege led to “the deterioration of economic conditions and the spread of internal phenomena in our societies such as murder, suicide and other negative effects on women and society,” according to the Women’s Board.
