Syria’s AANES warns of new coronavirus wave more dangerous
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, a Jiwan Mustafa, co-chair of the Health Board of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), warned of another wave of coronavirus more dangerous, coming in the mid of this summer, amid the Autonomous Administration taking measures to confront it.
In May, the AANES lifted the total and partial lockdown after a remarkable decrease of the number of infections, which was preceded by the complete lockdown imposed on all of the AANES areas.
The number of coronavirus infections in the AANES areas, with the newly cases announced on Wednesday, has amounted to 17,919 cases, including 732 deaths and 1,875 recoveries.
“The virus is still dangerous and lifting the lockdown allows it to spread and turn into another wave,” Mustafa said.
“All studies have shown that there is another wave of the virus coming with the advent of this summer,” he added.
“The virus is currently stable, where the number of infections has come down, but the region may hit by a stronger wave of the virus,” the official stated.
He pointed out that the Health Board has taken preventative procedures, and it works on securing the vaccine for the region, in addition to imposing new lockdown on the region in the coming period before the arrival of the new wave.
“We have received about 17,500 coronavirus vaccines, and another 6,000 doses are arriving in the coming days, to be 23,000,” Mustafa indicated.
These amounts of vaccines are allocated for the medical staff, who are in the first defense line confronting the virus and keeping it under control, according to the Health Board co-chair.
There is a future plan of the Health Board to vaccinate the vulnerable people who need the vaccine, especially the elderly who are over 55 years old and with chronic diseases, according to Mustafa.
“There are serious discussions with the World Health Organization (WHO) and there are promises to secure a vaccine for this group of people, and soon there will be a positive response in this regard,” the co-chair of the Health Board concluded.
