Abu Hamam Hospital, east of Syria’s Deir ez-Zor, calls for support

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Abdulqader Ahmed, Director of Abu Hamam Hospital, 90 km east of Deir ez-Zor, called on the Health Committee of the Deir ez-Zor Civil Council and humanitarian organizations to provide the necessary support to the hospital.

Hospitals and medical points in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor still lack adequate medical equipment and devices and medicines.

Ahmed told North Press, that work at the hospital began on February 4, to complete a hundred days of work without providing adequate support from any party.

He added that the equipment in the hospital is an ultrasound device and a labor chair, which are borrowed from private clinics.

The hospital does not include an operating room, laboratory, or x-ray machines.

On October 13, 2020, the Autonomous Administration of northern and eastern Syria (AANES) with the participation of a delegation from the Global Coalition opened a project to rehabilitate Abu Hamam Hospital.

On March 18, the hospital was opened in the presence of the co-chair of the Deir ez-Zor Civil Council, Ghassan Youssef, and the deputy of the US Special Envoy for Syria David Bronstein.

The hospital has not received any support until now, according to Ahmed, and between 300 and 500 patients visit Abu Hamam hospital on a daily basis.

The hospital needs to equip an operating room, x-ray equipment, a laboratory, an echocardiogram device, and care rooms, as well as an oxygen system, as the region is witnessing an increasing number of coronavirus cases, and there is an urgent need for ambulances and furniture, according to the hospital director.

Ahmed stated that the hospital is currently relying on donations from well-off residents of the area, in addition to medicines provided by the Health Committee that are not sufficient for a week.

He warned that the hospital might be shut down due to the lack of medicines and devices.
