Government forces shell Turkish-backed armed groups in Syria’s Zawiya Mountain
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, Syrian government forces shelled posts of the Turkish-backed armed groups in Zawiya Mountain, south Idlib countryside, northwest Syria.
Government forces shelled the fortifications of the armed groups in the towns of Kafar Aweed and al-Haloba with artillery shells and rocket launchers, military sources from the armed groups told North Press.
The shelling coincided with intensive flight of Russian warplanes and drones over the countryside of Idlib, Hama, Latakia, and Aleppo, reporting no airstrikes so far, according to the sources.
The armed groups’ fortifications in the town of al-Bara, south Idlib, witnessed mortar shelling by the government forces in the city of Kafr Nubul, according to the sources.
Meanwhile, Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room, that includes Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Jaysh al-Izza (Army of Glory) in addition to the National Front for Liberation (a Turkish-backed Syrian opposition coalition), announced that they managed to kill a government soldier and wounded another in the town of al-Burayj, south Idlib.
The military escalation between Syrian government forces and pro-Turkish armed groups within the de-escalation zone comes despite the ceasefire agreement between Turkey and Russia which has entered its second year.
