HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – During the last week, Health Board of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) recorded ten coronavirus infections and two deaths through its medical teams in Washokani Camp, near the city of Hasakah, northeast Syria.

AANES Health Board has been imposing a complete lockdown in Washokani and Sere Kaniye Camps, which houses more than 25,000 IDPs from Sere Kaniye, in Hasakah countryside for more than a week.

Turkish army and Turkish-backed armed groups took control over Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad, north Syria, in late 2019.

Rima Rasol, a member of the Health Board in AANES, said that the medical centers in Washokani Camp have received 33 suspected coronavirus cases during the last week.

The medical tests confirmed that ten people have tested positive for coronavirus recording two deaths and eight recoveries.

AANES-held areas are witnessing increasing coronavirus cases bringing the total toll of infections in northeast Syria to 13,423 cases including 447 deaths and 1,421 recoveries.

On Tuesday, the complete lockdown began in the AANES-held areas against the coronavirus outbreak following another complete lockdown in the cities of Qamishli, Hasakah, Raqqa, and other areas.

With the emergence of coronavirus pandemic in the area, the Health Board in Jazira Region established a quarantine center to receive suspected cases in Washokani Camp in addition to providing awareness campaigns to IDPs.

Rasol mentioned that the other camp for the IDPs of Sere Kaniye did not record infections although there were suspected cases.

She added that they are discussing the possibility to establish a quarantine center and a health office there.

On April 12, the Health Board issued an urgent appeal to all international organizations, primarily the WHO, to immediately intervene and prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in northeast Syria.
