Fuel crisis worsens water crisis in Syria’s Damascus
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Saturday, many residents of towns in Rif Dimashq governorate expressed their anger regarding the long-term water cutoff that coincided with an electricity cutoff and fuel crisis, decreasing the duration of operating water pumps in the institution.
The towns of Rif Dimashq are witnessing massive electricity rationing of up to 18 hours, and successive malfunctions that caused a water cutoff to the residents.
In the past days, the water crisis deteriorated due to the fuel shortage leaving some neighborhoods without water for days.
Hassan Mahmud (a pseudonym), an employee in the Education Ministry residing in Jaramana, south Damascus, told North Press that he was forced to fill the household tank with water from trucks roaming in the town due to water cutoff more than a week ago.
“I fill the tank at 20,000 Syrian pounds (SYP) each three days, as each barrel costs 4,000 SYP,” he mentioned.
“If the crisis continues, it will be hard for me to buy water; we use it as sparingly as possible and for necessities only,” he added.
