Tribes conference covers opposition’s violations: Syria’s Sere Kaniye IDPs

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, displaced people from the city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), northeast Syria, which is under the control of Turkish-backed armed groups, considered the participation of those they described as “murderers” in a tribal conference held by officials of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) “to ignore the daily violations against the population.”

Two days ago, the Syrian Tribes and Clans Council affiliated with the Turkish-backed opposition groups, held a conference in the town of al-Adwaniyah in Sere Kaniye countryside.

Representatives from the SNC, the Syrian Interim Government and the Syrian Negotiating Commission participated in the conference, some of them accused of widespread violations and murders, such as Muhammad al-Jasem, known as Abu Amsha, and Hatem Abu Shaqra, who appeared in videos during the murder of the politician, Hevrin Khalaf.

“The participation of killers such as Abu Shaqra, Abu Amsha and others, who work with the SNC in changing the demographic of the region, is turning a blind eye to the daily violations in the region,” Osman Ali, IDP from Sere Kaniye, told North Press.

“More than 90% of the indigenous population are displaced and live in camps and in difficult living conditions due to the practices of these groups and those who attended the recent conference,” he added.

“Such meetings will not produce anything other than taking pictures and showing off in front of public opinion, as they do not represent the will of a people who were displaced because of them,” Ali noted.

“Holding any meeting or conference in Sere Kaniye amid violations and security chaos, aims at attempting to legitimize these violations,” said Khalaf Berro, IDP from Sere Kaniye.

“The conference only expressed the bankruptcy of the Coalition that ran it, especially in light of the shy attendance,” Berro added.

Those who attended, represent only a small segment of the people of Sere Kaniye, as “the city is almost empty of Kurds, Christians and Armenians,” according to Berro.

Birro pointed out that the contents of the churches were stolen, and the Kurdish martyrs’ shrine was transformed into military headquarters, as those people encroached on the sanctities of the peoples of the region, so “how can anyone accept them?”

The conference, in which the Turkish flag was raised, took the slogan “The Great Meeting of Tribes and Clans in the Peace Spring,” and it said in a statement that it included “a well-balanced representation” of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, Christians and from all Syrian regions.

This conference comes in light of the daily violations against the indigenous people of the cities of Sere Kaniye, Tel Abyad and Afrin, according to the testimonies of displaced people and local and international reports.
