Moscow condemns international interference in Syrian presidential elections
LATAKIA, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin condemned the calls made by some countries and parties to not recognize the results of the presidential elections scheduled in Syria this year.
Vershinin said in an interview with RIA Novosti Agency that the statements in many international forums about adopting a new constitution for Syria, on the basis of which the elections will be held, are interfering in Syrian affairs.
The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister said that the calls not to recognize the upcoming presidential elections deprive Syrians of their right to elect their leaders.
Faisal Mekdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Republic, told Sputnik on the 21st of December that the elections will be held as stipulated in the current constitution.
A day later, Bouthaina Shaaban, the political and media adviser to the Syrian presidency, said that the next elections will run smoothly.
She added, “The United States violates all international resolutions regarding Syria, including Resolution 2254, whose first clause stipulates the unity and integrity of Syria.”
A leader in the internal opposition body known as the National Coordination Commission (who refused to be named) told North Press that the biggest obstacle to UN resolution 2254 is the Syrian regime.
The majority of international forums active in the Syrian issue have served the Syrian regime at the expense of an entire people, he added.
