Rehabilitation of Syria’s largest equestrian city begins in Raqqa
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – The Youth and Sports Committee of the Raqqa Civil Council recently began rehabilitation of the equestrian city in Raqqa.
Hussam Matar, head of the Horse Association in Raqqa, said that the equestrian city in Raqqa is the largest in Syria, and dates back to 1969.
It was officially opened in 1991 on an area of 44 hectares of land, according to Matar.
The facility was completely destroyed during the battles that took place in the region between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2017.
According to Matar, the facility consists of 61 summer stables and 20 winter stables, in addition to a 1,200-meter-long racetrack.
Abdulkarim Abbas, an administrator in the Youth and Sports Committee, said that they are, in cooperation with the Public Finance Committee and the Technical Services Office, rehabilitating the equestrian city north of Raqqa.
According to Abbas, the restoration work includes removing rubble from the floor of the racetracks and preparing them, in addition to many other things.
These actions come within the framework of the efforts made by the Sports Committee to restore sports and encourage horse breeding in Raqqa, Abbas added.
