Government forces shell villages and towns in Syria’s Idlib

IDLIB, Syria (North Press)  – On Friday, Syrian government forces continued shelling villages and towns in Idlib governorate within the de-escalation zone that is subject to an agreement between Moscow and Ankara in northwestern Syria.

A source told North Press that the government bombardment, which he described as violent, hit the towns of Kansafra and Kafaraweed, and the villages of Sufuhn, Fatira and Falifel in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib.

The region has been witnessing a military escalation and mutual bombardment between government forces and Turkish-backed armed opposition groups, in conjunction with the evacuation of a number of Turkish military posts.

The source pointed out that government forces targeted neighborhoods in the town of Kafr Aweid with high-explosive surface-to-surface missiles, which caused significant material damage. No casualties were reported.

The bombing accompanied with an intense flight of Russian drones within the airspace of Idlib, Hama, and Latakia provinces.

Hayat Tahrir Sham reported on Thursday, that an officer and three members of the government forces had been killed in an attack on the town of Fateira, south of Idlib.

The de-escalation zone has been witnessing mutual shelling between the government forces and the opposition groups for months, targeting the governorates of Idlib, Hama, Aleppo, and Latakia.

The Russian-Turkish signed agreement in 2017 and its additional protocol in March 2020 provide for a halt to the military actions in the governorate of Idlib and its surroundings.
