New Israeli attack targeting areas south of Syria’s capital of Damascus
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, areas south of Syria’s capital city of Damascus, were attacked by missiles came from the direction of the Golan Heights, possibly being Israeli.
The Golan Heights, a rocky plateau in south-western Syria, has a political and strategic significance which belies its size. Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in the closing stages of the 1967 Six-Day War. Most of the Syrian Arab inhabitants fled the area during the conflict.
Israel recently announced that its warplanes targeted, in two successive attacks, military sites belonging to the Syrian government and others belonging to Iran and Hezbollah in the vicinity of Damascus.
A military source told the Syrian official news agency SANA that at 11:50 pm on Tuesday night, Israel launched an air strike from the direction of the Golan Heights towards Damascus, and the losses were limited to material only. The military source did not provide any additional information about the attacks.
Israel launched air strikes on what it described as a wide range of Syrian and Iranian targets in Syria on Wednesday. While SANA said at the time, “The air defense forces responded to the missile attacks launched by Israel on the twentieth of this month, and managed to shoot down enemy missiles.”
At the time, Israel announced, in an official statement, that the raids were in response to the firing of rockets by an Iranian force from Syrian territory towards Israel.
It indicated that during the raids, Syrian surface-to-air missiles (SAM) were launched despite the clear warning of the Syrian side to avoid this.
At the time, the Israeli bombing hit a house in Saasa, southwest of Damascus, destroying it, killing two people (a man and a woman) and wounding many others.
SANA quoted a military source on November 12, that three soldiers were killed and another wounded in an Israeli attack on the southern region.
On the 12th of last month, Israeli missiles targeted the home of the military official of the Islamic jihadist movement al-Quds Brigades, in the Mezzeh Villas neighborhood, western Damascus.
