Theft of power cables cuts off water to towns in Syria’s Suwayda

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Two towns in Suwayda, south Syria, witnessed a water cut-off on Tuesday due to the theft of electricity cables which supplied wells with power.

Thefts have been repeatedly occurring in Syrian government-held areas in the light of deteriorating living conditions due to the collapse of Syrian currency.

Unidentified groups stole the power cables that supplied the water wells with power in the towns of Kharsa’a and Walahtha, Rahim al-Shamandari, Head of the Repair and Maintenance sector in the Electricity Directorate in Suwayda, said.

The water shortage will last for days until new power lines are set up by the repair and maintenance teams of the Directorate, al-Shamandari added.

These incidents have been occurring since the beginning of November; however, during the past ten days, three thefts of power cables occurred. Days ago, an unidentified group stole the electricity cables from the town of Bark, and a similar theft took place in the town of Salkhad.

The thefts were carried out with a large iron cutter for copper wires and electricity cables, al-Shamandari said, adding that thieves stole the cables and sold them in the black market because power cables are expensive and not available in the local markets.
