Syrian Center for Weather and Climate warns of thunderstorms, torrential rain

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian center for weather and climate warned on Wednesday of thunderstorms and strong winds, as well as torrential rains in the coming hours.

The center’s warnings come amid deteriorating conditions of services in Syria to drain the amount of rain through the sewage system.

This is in addition to the lack of any plans in the relevant services the Syrian government has to respond to such storms.

The storm began on Sunday in Damascus and the southern areas of Syria, and caused torrential rains and pools of water in some of streets, causing serious damage to civilian property.

It also spread to the coastal and northern areas, causing damage on the streets of Latakia due to garbage collection in the drainage system.

Local authorities promised to take measures to prevent the phenomenon from happening again, but none of this has been achieved, according to local sources.

“The area will be affected by a deep and effective atmospheric depression, which will begin today starting from the western area of the Syrian coast and the northwestern areas,” the center said on Wednesday in its forecast.

According to the center, the atmospheric depression will be accompanied by strong gusts of wind and heavy rain with thunderstorms.

The Syrian Government’s Directorate General of Meteorology predicted that temperatures will start to drop this evening in Damascus.

Rainfall is expected to exceed last year’s levels at this time of year.

The Weather and Climate Center warned of active winds on Thursday, with strong gusts, thunderstorms on the coast and areas of northwestern Syria and areas of Damascus and its countryside and rural Homs.

It also warned of the formation of floods and localized floods in low-lying areas, and called for people to stay away from low-lying areas in case of heavy rains.
