Mass grave of unidentified persons uncovered near Syria’s Azaz

AZAZ, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, a mass grave containing the dead bodies of unidentified persons was found near the city of Azaz, north of Aleppo, which is under the control of the Turkish-backed opposition armed groups.

A military source told North Press that a mass grave was found among agricultural lands near the Military Police checkpoint at the western gate of Azaz.

He added that the Civilian Police, with the help of the Criminal Security and Evidence Department, extracted seven unidentified bodies on Wednesday, while the search for more is still ongoing.

In a statement published on Wednesday, the Azaz Media Center said that the Civil Police began their investigations to determine the identity of the bodies as well as the time and circumstances in which they were killed.

The Azaz Media Center, an organization affiliated with the Turkish-backed Syrian opposition, indicated that after the investigations, it became clear that “the grave dates back to the period of ISIS control between 2013 and 2014.”

The city of Azaz has been under the control of Turkish-backed opposition armed groups since July 2012, which raises doubts about the accuracy of the media center’s statement.
