Syrian IDPs from Hawl camp continue return home in coordination with region’s tribes

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Amina Omar, the co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), said on Tuesday that the process of returning Syrian IDPs from Hawl Camp in Hasakah, northeastern Syria, continues in coordination with the sheikhs and notables of the region’s tribes.

In an exclusive statement to North Press, Omar added that their initiative was based on demands by sheikhs and tribal leaders in the region to send Syrians from Hawl Camp back to their homes.

She indicated that “the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria took our initiative into consideration and agreed to voluntarily return those who wish to do so.”

“The Autonomous Administration continues implementing deportation procedures according to lists submitted by the sheikhs and notables of the region, as these are well studied so that the date of the exit trips is named afterwards,” Omar noted.

Syrians residing in the Autonomous Administration areas will be returned first. After that, Syrians residing in both Syrian government and the opposition-held areas can return, Omar said.

The number of Syrians in Hawl camp and those residing outside the Autonomous Administration areas is more than 14,000 who were living in Syrian government- and opposition-held areas, according to Sheikhmous Ahmed, head of the IDP Office in the Autonomous Administration.

The decision to take the displaced out of Hawl Camp was based on one of the recommendations of the tribal conference held in early May 2019 in Ain Issa.

On June 3, the Autonomous Administration allowed the return of 800 women and children of ISIS families living in Hawl Camp back to their homes in the countryside of Tabqa and Raqqa after legal guarantees by tribal leaders.

In turn, sheikhs and tribal leaders in the countryside of Hasakah praised the decision of the Autonomous Administration to return Syrian families to their homes.

“The decision enhances the unity of the region’s population,” a tribal notable from Shadaddi told North Press.
