ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – Turkish bases have been bombarding a number of villages in the Sherawa district south of Afrin, northwestern Syria, for hours, amid reports of damage to an ancient village in the area.
A North Press correspondent from the area reported that the Turkish base in Basufan village in Sherawa district bombarded the vicinity of the villages of Burj Qas and Kaloteh with dozens of shells since 2 p.m.
The correspondent added that the school administration of Burj Qas was forced to send children home early as the bombardment approached the village, while residents resorted to hiding inside their homes or in nearby caves.
More than 40 Turkish artillery shells hit Kaloteh Castle, which damaged the ancient building.
The shelling is ongoing at the time of this report.
Hundreds of displaced families live in the villages of Sherawa. There are about 60 families residing in the village of Kaloteh, in addition to a number of displaced families.
Areas of southern Afrin are almost subjected to daily bombardment by Turkish forces and their affiliated Syrian armed opposition forces.
On September 12, two civilians were injured in Burj Qas as a result of Turkish shelling, which also caused damage to civilian property.
