Kuwait’s Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad died

(North Press) – Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, has died on Tuesday evening in a hospital in the United States of America (USA) at the age of 91.

The announcement was made by the Kuwaiti Minister of the Amiri Diwan, Sheikh Ali al-Jarrah al-Sabah, in a statement broadcast on television.

Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah was born in 1929. He played a prominent role in mobilizing the international support for his country’s cause during the Iraq’s occupation of Kuwait in 1990.

Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah became Emir of Kuwait in late January 2006, following the death of Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs for nearly four decades.

In 2019, the late Sheikh spent weeks of treatment in the US, and returned to it on July 23 to complete treatment after he underwent a surgery in Kuwait.

On July 18, he transferred some of the powers of the Emir of the country to his crown prince, Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, who is 83, according to RT.

The al-Sabah family has been ruling the country since the middle of the 18th century, according to a hereditary system of government, in which the choice of the Emir of the country is subject to several rules and customs in addition to the country’s constitution.
